First Five-Star Hotel in Sheffield
Early September saw the announcement of a £38m hotel. The 198-room Crowne Plaza will be built on a car park known as Smithfield, next to the Royal Victoria Hotel and bordered by the River Don, Victoria Station Road and the Inner Relief Road (A61) Map
As part of the development, nine arches underneath Victoria Station Road will be developed into 'quality restaurant outlets'.
Scheduled for opening in 2009, this project is expected to create over 100 new jobs. Plans will be put before by the city's planners before the end of this year.
This development marks a rapid surge in hotel building in Sheffield. As well as the above project:
- A Holiday Inn Express near to the above site is planned, with 161 beds.
- A Jury's Inn hotel is rising from the site of the old Office World on Arundel Gate. Included in the contemporary multi-million pound central project, which nestles between the city centre and the Cultural Industries Quarter, will be Sheffield's tallest office development for more than 30 years - a striking 15 storey grade-A office building offering floor space between 7,500-10,000 sq ft, a 254-bed hotel plus 14,000 sq ft of leisure and retail space. Demolition of the former Office World site has now started and the hotel is expected to be complete by December 2008.(Artists impression below)
